The Book Loft on Amelia Island
The Book Loft, soon to celebrate its 28th Anniversary, is the legacy of Bill Nelson, a business executive from Ohio. After a major illness, Bill agreed to work with a major book store in Ohio, to help increase profitability. As a result, Bill discovered a whole new lifestyle for himself. He and his wife, Sue moved to Amelia Island and opened The Book Loft on Centre St.
The concept is "an old-fashioned bookstore" where people can relax and lose themselves in a book. Customers are really nostalgic, approaching the store slowly, standing and staring at what they have missed. The Book Loft is a general bookstore with something for everyone. We have five sections from children, including classic, pirate, young adult and seasonal. Adults may choose from fiction, non-fiction, class, food and wine, inspirational, pirates, Florida, Georgia and Civil War history, and autographed first editions. Our specialty is local authors. In the loft there are travel guides, sci-fi, decor, sports, games, politics, history and a collection of older, rare books. We have a new "used book" section with half-priced books. Come upstairs and meet our resident ghost, Catherine.
Bill, who had set the theme of the store, passed away in January of 2011. Sue, always ready for a challenge, decided to continue the operation of the store, despite the economic atmosphere, when independent bookstores were shutting their doors. Her decision was correct as the store has flourished and continues to grow. Today, the store offers a Children's Hour, author signings and events, book launches, book club meetings, knitting groups, French classes, and a gallery of William Maurer's art.
The store appeals to all demographics: tourists, locals, historians and children to mention a few. Sue attributes the success of the business to her staff and customer base. Our staff has a deep knowledge of the inventory and each of them brings a different talent and commitment. Our local customers are loyal and very supportive. We appreciate their business! Many celebrities have frequented the store, including John Grisham, Dean Koontz, Steve Berry, Pat Conroy, and Jimmy Buffet, to name a few. On any given day you might have an author drop in unnoticed.
